How to choose books for your baby or toddler
Here are a few qualities to look for in a children’s book…
1 | Short & Sweet
Shorter books with few words per page are best for most babies and toddlers. You can also simplify longer books as you read to fit your child’s attention span better.
2 | Realistic
Choose mostly realistic books about everyday life, rather than fantasy stories about talking animals, monsters, and so on. You don’t need to be too strict about this, though. Encouraging a love of books is the most important thing!
3 | Interesting Topics
Most toddlers enjoy books about everyday life activities, like taking a trip to the library or playing outside. Some other favorite topics include nature, animals, bugs, vehicles, food, and families.
4 | Beautiful Illustrations
Pictures help children understand (and enjoy!) stories. So look for books with unique and attractive illustrations likely to catch your child’s eye.
5 | Variety
Children benefit from a mix of storybooks and informational books, as well as classic and modern reads. To best support your little one’s development, you’ll want to build a small collection of both fiction and non-fiction books, old and new.
6 | Fun to Read
Rhythm, rhyme, and onomatopoeia can make books more fun for toddlers. Interactive books are another great option. And of course, the more fun you have reading, the more fun your child will have listening, so look for books you enjoy, too!
